DENTAL PROPHYLAXIS
Dental prophylaxis is the totality of personal hygiene measures and professional dental procedures (scaling, brushing, AirFlow, fluoridation) aimed at preventing cavities, gum disease and tartar. It maintains oral health, reduces the need for expensive treatments and prevents bad breath. It is recommended to be performed periodically every 6 months.
1. Professional dental hygiene
One of the pillars of prophylaxis that helps maintain dental health over time is professional hygiene - the complex teeth cleaning procedure performed by the dentist, which removes bacterial plaque, tartar and stains from the teeth through methods such as ultrasonic scaling, the AirFlow technique and professional brushing, where:
Ultrasonic scaling – is a procedure in which tartar accumulated on the surface of the teeth and the subgingival space, fixed prosthetic restorations or orthodontic appliances is removed, using an ultrasonic device;
AirFlow (sandblasting technique) – the procedure is performed using a jet of water, air and fine powder, effectively cleans coffee and tobacco stains and bacterial plaque from hard-to-reach, interdental areas;
Professional brushing - in the case of this type of treatment, all remnants of dental plaque, or tartar, from the surface of the teeth are removed using abrasive pastes with grains of various sizes, applied to a low-speed rotating brush, smoothing and polishing the tooth enamel and delaying the accumulation of bacterial plaque.
Advantages of the sanitation procedure:
- removes tartar and bacterial plaque
- prevents the formation of cavities and gingival inflammation
- prevents premature tooth loss
- gives teeth a clean and smooth appearance
- improves breath
2. Sensitivity treatment
Tooth sensitivity (dental hypersensitivity - hyperesthesia) is a sharp, short-lived pain caused by exposure of the dentin (the layer under the enamel) to stimuli such as hot, cold, sweet, acidic or brushing, due to enamel wear or gum recession, and treatment varies from special toothpastes to dental interventions, a visit to the dentist being crucial to detect the cause.
Common causes of tooth sensitivity include: aggressive brushing that leads to enamel wear or gum recession, exposing the roots, enamel erosion can be caused by frequent consumption of acidic or carbonated foods/beverages, or bruxism (teeth grinding), gingival retraction (gums recede, leaving the root exposed), in some cases short-term sensitivity can occur after dental procedures: after whitening, scaling or polishing, genetic factors.
In treating tooth sensitivity, teamwork between doctor and patient is important. After diagnosing the cause, an individual treatment is applied depending on the cause of the sensitivity, for example, using specialized toothpastes that contain ingredients (potassium nitrate, fluoride) and block painful signals, applying correct brushing techniques, using a soft toothbrush, avoiding aggressive foods/drinks, reducing the consumption of sweets, acids, hot or very cold drinks, fabricating night guards for bruxism (teeth grinding), sealing, fluoridation, protective varnishes, depending on the needs of each patient. It is important to remember that tooth sensitivity can be treated and you do not have to live with this discomfort.
Benefits obtained after treating sensitivity:
- reduces or eliminates discomfort
- protects the tooth structure
- improves daily comfort
- protects the gums from further recession
3. Crack sealing
Fissure sealing is a procedure often used to prevent tooth decay in the fissures and pits of both temporary and permanent teeth. This procedure is similar to applying of dental fillings, but due to the specialized materials used for this procedure, it makes it simpler, faster and more comfortable for the patient. The process is non-invasive, quick and painless, making it very popular, especially in pediatric dentistry, to ensure a positive experience for children. By sealing the grooves and pits of the teeth with resin or glass ionomer sealants, a physical barrier is created and prevents the accumulation of food debris and the development of cavities.
Advantages of the sealing procedure:
- prevents the appearance of cavities
- quick and painless procedure
- long-lasting protection
4. Teeth fluoridation
Teeth fluoridation is a preventive dental procedure that applies fluoride (gel, lacquer, varnish) to the teeth to strengthen them, prevent cavities, reduce tooth sensitivity and help remineralize enamel, being a simple, painless method, essential especially for children, but also effective for adults. It is performed after professional cleaning and involves the application of high-fluoride products, specially designed for dental use, with specific instructions to avoid rinsing/eating immediately after application.
To date, fluoride is the only element with proven cario-prophylactic properties. Fluoride is a natural mineral, found in small quantities even in water or certain foods. Although it can be harmful to the body, using fluoride in moderate amounts can help patients prevent cavities, giving them healthy and beautiful teeth.
In the case of human teeth, the body needs a certain additional dose of fluoride, so the dental fluoridation procedure is necessary and beneficial. Although it can be done at home using a gel applied with dental trays, it is still recommended that the teeth fluoridation be performed by a specialist at a dental office. This recommendation aims to achieve better dental fluoridation with long-lasting effects, but also to avoid risks that may arise. Excess fluoride is toxic to the body, so it is important that the fluoridation be performed by a dentist.
Teeth whitening is always performed after a professional dental cleaning with ultrasonic scaling and airflow, applying fluoride with a special gel, paste or varnish.
Advantages of the fluoridation procedure:
- Reducing the risk of tooth decay
- Beneficial for patients with sensitive teeth, by reducing dental hypersensitivity
- Beneficial for braces wearers
- Provides a protective layer against acids
- Strengthens the structure and enamel of teeth
- Beneficial for patients with periodontal disease (who have exposed tooth roots)
- Beneficial for patients with deficient tooth tissue structures
- Beneficial before and after teeth whitening procedures
